Treat Tuesday: Soft Chicken Training Treats

For this Treat Tuesday I decided to make a treat that was perfect to use while training your pooch. Carter has gone through a variety of different training, he's done obedience and he is about to start agility, but its always hard to find cheap treats that are pliable enough to use for training. I'm a big fan of Zuke's treats, but the fact of the matter is they get expensive after a while, so I decided to make a homemade version of these treats. These treats are simple to make, and are so inexpensive compared to buying already made treats, plus you get to control the ingredients that you put in them.

20 oz. Chicken Livers (Do Not Drain)
2 1/2 Cup Fast Cooking Oats
1 teaspoon Baking Powder
1 teaspoon Garlic Powder
1 teaspoon Basil
6 oz. Blueberries
1 Tablespoon Olive Oil or Canola Oil

Preheat oven to 350°.

Combine all ingredients in a blender and blend until smooth.

Line two 9x13" pans with foil, and spray them with a non stick cooking spray. (This will make it much easier for you to get the treats out once they are cooked)

Spread the mixture evenly between the two pans.

Carter laid in front of the oven the entire time the treats were baking, I think its safe to say he was excited.
Bake for 25 minutes. The top of the treats should be set at this point, if they aren't leave them in until the top of the treats no longer appear to be moist.

Once cooled, you can cut the treats into bite side pieces. I cut mine to about the size of a pea, this way they last a long time while in classes.

Store the remaining treats in the refrigerator. If you won't be using them for at least a week I recommend freezing them. I freeze them in individual zip lock bags, this way the night before a class I move one bag into the refrigerator and by the time class starts the treats are defrosted.

The best part of this recipe is some of the ingredients are completely interchangeable, the herbs and the fruit can easily be changed. For example, you can replace the garlic power with, turmeric, parsley, or rosemary, and you can easily replace the blueberries with carrots or apples. If your dog prefers a certain food its simple to change it.

Carter seems to love these treats more than any of the other treats I have made in the past few weeks. An added bonus of these treats is if you have an older dog with bad teeth, these treats of soft enough for them to enjoy. Whether its obiedence, agility, rally or flying disk, get out there will your pup and take a class (and they will enjoy these homemade rewards when you do!)

I was going to end my blog here, but as I did Carter started barking. Usually when Carter barks its a sign he needs to go outside, so I always tell him show me what you want. To my surprise when I told him show me, he lead me right to the fridge. Now I have to say I was excited that he was so thrilled about these new treats, but I'm not too fond of the begging. Though, now I think its safe to say he will do any thing and listen well in order to get his hands on these treats:)

Love and Paws,

    1. You should be able to buy chicken livers at your local grocery store. I know my store told me they only keep them in stock when the chicken products are on sale because they don't usually sell. So when they are on sale I usually stock up because they freeze well.
